Lex Pro Se: WhatsApp AI Agent with Lawyers in the Loop for Legal Services to Individuals & SMEs
Overview of Lex Pro Se
Legal services in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) are expensive and out of reach for most individuals and SMEs. Generic generative AI tools offer a cheap solution, but their outputs contain hallucinations, aren’t grounded in local legal content, and lack legal expertise from lawyers, making them unreliable.
Lex Pro Se addresses these challenges with an “Uber for Legal Services” platform based on our prior work developing WhatsApp-based, human-in-the-loop AI technologies that served people in LMICs. Lex Pro Se will implement an AI agent that coordinates
(1) taking users' legal queries or requests on WhatsApp,
(2) cheaply generates first drafts grounded in local legal content, and
(3) routes them to the best-matching licensed lawyers on the platform for quick verification.
Lex Pro Se will enable individuals and SMEs in LIMCs to access affordable, reliable legal services and justice in a way that was not possible before, thereby contributing to a just and fair society (SDG 10 and 16) and the economy (SDG 9).
